What is a Portable Oxygen Concentrator?

A portable oxygen concentrator is a medical device that helps deliver oxygen therapy to people who have low levels of oxygen in their blood. These individuals require higher oxygen concentration than available in ambient air. You can simply plug in the portable oxygen concentrator to an electrical source or portable battery which will allow you to use it comfortably. In case your battery has run out, you can simply charge it. You can also find several adapters that can help you to use the POC device while driving or taking a ride in a vehicle.

Portable oxygen concentrators are smaller in size than stationary home oxygen concentrator units and are therefore more mobile. They are small enough to carry around, most are FAA-approved for air travel, and can operate on a battery for added flexibility.

2)How Does a Portable Oxygen Concentrator Work?

a. An oxygen concentrator uses a five-step process to work.

A portable oxygen concentrator takes in air from the room and purifies it.

 The oxygen is then compressed.

Nitrogen is removed from the air. Before air goes into the concentrator, it contains 80 percent nitrogen and only 20 percent oxygen.

The portable oxygen concentrator converts the air to 90-95 percent pure oxygen and just 5-10 percent nitrogen.

Nitrogen is then separated to make sure you get the highest dose of oxygen possible.

b. Continuous Flow Dose and Pulse Mode Delivery

There are two types of oxygen delivery for portable oxygen concentrators.

Continuous Flow does exactly as it sounds and provides a constant flow of oxygen to the user, regardless of inhalation or exhalation. A portable continuous flow oxygen concentrator requires larger parts, so these devices tend to be over 10 lbs. Not all portable oxygen concentrators have continuous mode.

Pulse Dose Mode delivers oxygen only when the patient inhales. There is less effort on the machine since it stops during exhalation, which in turn reduces battery use. These portable oxygen concentrators are smaller in size and typically weigh around 6 lbs. Note: Your prescription would need to indicate your pulse dose settings.

The use of oxygen has two main functions in mountaineering:

  1. Auxiliary: reduce the mountain reaction, improve mountaineering efficiency, and reduce the possibility of serious high reversal during normal climbing. Generally used for mountains above 4000 meters.

  2. Treatment: when there is a serious high anti-time, timely use of oxygen, rapid withdrawal is the first priority to save lives. In the event of a physical injury, the use of oxygen helps to enhance the overall function, resistance and recovery rate of the body. Therefore, the mountaineering team's preparing against the assault will take oxygen for emergency even not climbing 8000 meter peak. Serious hazaerds of hypoxia.

  3. Severe high altitude brain edema, May cause death within 24 hours of the onset of illness.

  4. Severe high altitude pulmonary edema. May cause death within 48 hours of the onset.

  5. Seriously affect the climber's consciousness, judgment, physical fitness, and thus lead to other dangers in the climb. For example, serious physical overdraft, resulting in inability to act and die; combined with low temperature environment, leading to serious loss of temperature caused by the breath;due to misjudgment, resulting in falling, lost, etc. causing death.

  6. Prolonged in a state of severe hypoxia, resulting in central nervous system damage such as in the brain. This damage is generally irreversible.

  7. Combined with low temperature environment, etc., resulting in severe frostbite. With the rapid development of social and commercial activities, more and more outdoor sports and activities which require fast oxygen supply at spot were drawn forth, such as diving, scuba, marine research, underwater filming, underwater construction, underground or cave expedition and archaeological research.
